Osteology
Osteologia
Definition
Osteology is a branch of anatomy that studies the skeleton (characteristic of Vertebrates) and the various bones that compose it.
Hard and rigid, bones are the passive organs of locomotion that serve as attachment points for muscles. They can also provide protection to certain fragile organs such as the central nervous system, the heart, and the lungs. Together, they determine the general shape and dimensions of each individual.
This field focuses on the shape, structure, topography, development, and functions of bones, in relation to the species, age, lifestyle, and functional adaptations.
