Dorsal intertransverse muscles of tail [of coccyx]

Musculi intertransversarii dorsales caudae [coccygis]

  • Synonym: Dorsal intertransverse muscles of tail

Definition

Antoine Micheau, Anne-Sophie Emeric

Origin: Dorsalsacral iliac ligament on the lateral part of the third caudal vertebra.

Insertion: Transverse process of the fifth and sixth caudal vertebra.

Action: With the intertransversarius ventralis caudalis, lateral flexion of the tail.

Nerve: Branches of the plexus caudalis ventralis.

Variation:

In equids, the dorsal intertransverse muscles of tail are strong but are not visible until the tip of the tail. They originate from the dorsal part of the transverse process of the last sacral vertebrae, as well as from the transverse processes of the coccygeal vertebrae. The successive tendons insert on the transverse processes, and then on the rough areas that replace them.
