Superficial sphincter colli

Musculus sphincter colli superficialis

Definition

Stephan Mahler

The sphincter colli superficialis muscle is a superficial cutaneous muscle of the face, together with the sphincter colli profondus muscle and the platysma . The sphincter colli superficialis muscle is particularly developed in the laryngeal region, deep to the skin. Its delicate transverse fibres cover the ventral edges of the platysma, at the junction of the head and neck. Sometimes, these fibres reach the thorax, radiating above the shoulder joint or mixing with the cervical part of the platysma.
