Serous pericardium
Pericardium serosum
Definition
The serous pericardium is the inner component of the pericardium, consisting of a double-layered serous membrane that lines the fibrous pericardium and covers the heart.
It is composed of two layers: the parietal layer, which lines the internal surface of the fibrous pericardium, and the visceral layer (also known as the epicardium), which is adherent to the surface of the heart. The space between these two layers is the pericardial cavity, which normally contains a small amount of serous fluid that acts as a lubricant to reduce friction during cardiac motion.
