Definition

Antoine Micheau

The anterior basal segmental bronchus of the right lung (B8) is the segmental bronchus that arises from the basal trunk (basal segmental bronchus) of the right lower lobe bronchus and supplies the anterior basal segment (S8) of the right lower lobe.

After the right main bronchus gives off the right upper lobe bronchus, it continues as the bronchus intermedius, which then divides into the right middle lobe bronchus and the right lower lobe bronchus. The right lower lobe bronchus first gives off the superior segmental bronchus (B6), and the remaining trunk the basal trunk further divides into the individual basal segmental bronchi. B8 is the branch directed anteriorly and inferiorly, ventilating the anterior basal segment of the right lower lobe.

Key anatomical relationships and features:

  • Branching pattern: In the most common configuration (~57% of cases), the basal trunk gives rise to four separate basal segmental bronchi: B7 (medial basal), B8 (anterior basal), B9 (lateral basal), and B10 (posterior basal). However, significant variation exists in some individuals, B8 may share a common trunk with B7 (B7+8 pattern, seen in ~18% of cases) or with B9 (B8+9 pattern, ~10%).

  • Segmental territory: The anterior basal segment (S8) lies on the anterior and inferior surface of the right lower lobe, bordered medially by S7, laterally by S9, posteriorly by S10, and superiorly by S6.
