Cuspis anterior valvae atrioventricularis sinistrae
- Latin synonym: Cuspis aorticum valvae atrioventricularis sinistrae
- Synonym: Aortic leaflet of left atrioventricular valve; Anterior cusp of left atrioventricular valve; Anterior mitral leaflet
- Related terms: Anterior cusp; Anterior cusp of mitral valve
Definition
The anterior leaflet of left atrioventricular valve (anterior cups; aortic cusp of mitral valve) is the valvular cusp that occupies approximately one third of the mitral annular circumference and is in direct fibrous continuity with the aortic valve via the mitral-aortic curtain. Unlike the posterior leaflet, which is divided into three distinct scallops (P1, P2, P3), the anterior leaflet does not have true anatomical scallops; however, for localization purposes, its lateral, middle, and medial regions are conventionally labeled as A1, A2, and A3, respectively.[
The anterior leaflet is typically larger in radial height than the posterior leaflet, but both leaflets have roughly equal surface areas.
Chordal attachments to the anterior leaflet arise from both the anterolateral and posteromedial papillary muscles, with primary chordae attaching to the free edge and secondary chordae to the rough zone of the leaflet.
