Deferential plexus

Plexus deferentialis

  • Latin synonym: Plexus ductus deferentis
  • Synonym: Plexus of ductus deferens
  • Related terms: Deferential plexus; Plexus of ductus deferens male

Definition

Deferential plexus refers to a plexus of autonomic neurons and ganglia which is situated around the ductus deferens and seminal vesicles.

Being an extension of the inferior hypogastric plexus, the deferential plexus receives both sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons from the former. Please note that the sympathetic neurons arrive into the inferior hypogastric plexus via the sacral splanchnic nerves. Some sympathetic fibers also descend directly from the superior hypogastric plexus via the hypogastric nerves. Whereas, the parasympathetic neurons enter into the inferior hypogastric plexus via the pelvic splanchnic nerves.
