Episcleral layer

Lamina episcleralis

  • Latin synonym: Spatium episclerale
  • Synonym: Episcleral space
  • Related terms: Episcleral layer of sclera

Definition

The episcleral layer is the outermost layer of the sclera. It is composed of loose, fibrous, elastic tissue and attaches to Tenon's capsule.

A vascular plexus is found between the conjunctiva and the sclera consisting of two layers of vessels, the superficial episcleral vessels and the deep episcleral vessels.

In the terminologia anatomica 2, the episcleral layer is a synonym of the episcleral space (Subtenon’s space), a virtual space between the fascial sheath of eyeball (Tenon’s capsule) and the sclera.
