Episcleral space
Spatium episclerale
- Latin synonym: Spatium subtenoni
- Synonym: Subtenon's space
Definition
The episcleral space (Subtenon’s space) is a virtual space between the fascial sheath of eyeball (Tenon’s capsule) and the sclera.
The instillation of local anesthetic into the episcleral space produces analgesia and akinesia by diffusing posteriorly into the retro-orbital space to block the traversing sensory and motor nerves.
It is a synonym of the episcleral layer (the outermost layer of the sclera) in the Terminologia Anatomica 2.
