Extraconal space

Spatium extraconicum

  • Synonym: Extraconal orbital compartment; Peripheral orbital space

Definition

The extraconal space (Extraconal orbital compartment ; Peripheral orbital space) is located between the periorbita and the muscle cone formed by the extraocular muscles with their fascia.

Boundaries:

  • Peripherally: periorbita

  • Internally: four recti muscles with intermuscular septa

  • Anteriorly: orbital septum

  • Posteriorly: orbital apex

Contents:

  • Peripheral orbital fat

  • Muscles:

    • Superior oblique muscle

    • Inferior oblique muscle

    • Levator palpebrae superioris

    • Lacrimal gland and lacrimal sac

  • Arteries:

    • Lacrimal artery

    • Supraorbital artery

    • Posterior ethmoidal artery

    • Anterior ethmoidal artery

    • Internal palpebral artery

    • Supratrochlear artery

    • Dorsal nasal artery

    • Infraorbital artery

  • Veins:

    • Superior and inferior ophthalmic veins

    • Infraorbital vein

  • Nerves: lacrimal, fronal, trochlear, anterior and posterior ethmoidal nerves

Pathology:

  • Malignant lymphoma

  • Capillary hemangioma of childhood

  • Intrinsic neoplasm of lacrimal gland

  • Pseudotumour

  • Intraorbital and extra orbital lesions extending into extraconal space
