Definition
The genital branch of genitofemoral nerve is a peripheral nerve that arises from the genitofemoral nerve just above the inguinal ligament. It follows a distinct course, passing through the deep inguinal ring and traveling along the inguinal canal.
In males, the genital branch accompanies the spermatic cord, supplying motor innervation to the cremaster muscle, which is responsible for raising and lowering the testis. Additionally, it provides sensory innervation to the skin of the upper anterior scrotum.
In females, it accompanies the round ligament of the uterus within the inguinal canal and provides sensory innervation to the mons pubis and the labium majus.
The genital branch contains both somatic efferent (motor) fibers and sensory (afferent) fibers, enabling its dual role in motor and sensory innervation.
