  • Latin synonym: Ligamentum phrenicooesophageale inferius
  • Synonym: Inferior phrenico-esophageal ligament; Inferior phrenicooesophageal ligament

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The inferior phrenicoesophageal ligament anchors the esophagus to the diaphragm. It is composed of collagen and elastic fibers derived from the transversalis fascia and endothoracic fascia, attaching the esophagus to the diaphragmatic crura at the esophageal hiatus.

Note that the superior phrenicoesophageal ligament (or simply phrenicoesophageal ligament) doesn't anchor the esophagus to the diaphragm and is composed by pleural, subpleural (endothoracic) fascia, phrenoesophageal fascia (Laimer's), transversalis fascia and peritoneum.
