Lateral hypothalamic zone
Zona hypothalamica lateralis
- Latin synonym: Zona lateralis hypothalami; Area hypothalamica lateralis
- Synonym: Lateral hypothalamic area
Definition
The lateral hypothalamic zone forms the outermost region of the hypothalamus. It consists of a diffuse network of neurons interwoven with major fiber tracts, most prominently the medial forebrain bundle, which connects the hypothalamus with limbic and brainstem structures.
This zone plays a crucial role in feeding behavior, arousal, and reward processing. It is often referred to as the “feeding center” because its stimulation induces hunger and food-seeking behavior, whereas lesions result in anorexia. The lateral hypothalamic zone also contributes to wakefulness and motivational drive through its extensive connections with limbic and brainstem regions involved in emotional and behavioral regulation.
