Frontal forceps
Forceps frontalis
- Latin synonym: Forceps minor
- Synonym: Minor forceps
- Related terms: Minor forceps; Frontal forceps
Definition
The frontal forceps (a.k.a. the forceps minor), is formed by commissural fibres passing through the genu of the corpus callosum and projecting anteriorly into the frontal lobes of both cerebral hemispheres. These fibres connect frontal cortical regions across the midline and form part of the anterior callosal fibre system.
The fibres diverge as they enter the frontal white matter, producing the characteristic curved forceps-like arrangement. Through these interhemispheric connections, the anterior corpus callosum participates in the transfer and integration of information between the frontal lobes, including motor and higher cognitive information.
Important distinction
The forceps minor passes through the genu and projects into the frontal lobes, whereas the forceps major is formed by fibres passing through the splenium and projecting posteriorly between the occipital lobes.
