Pancreatic branches of anterior superior pancreaticoduodenal artery
Rami pancreatici arteriae pancreaticoduodenalis superioris anterioris
- Related terms: Pancreatic branches
Definition
The pancreatic branches of the anterior superior pancreaticoduodenal artery are small arterial branches that arise from the anterior superior pancreaticoduodenal artery (a branch of the gastroduodenal artery, itself originating from the common hepatic artery of the celiac trunk). These branches supply the head and, to a lesser extent, the uncinate process of the pancreas.
Anatomical Details
The anterior superior pancreaticoduodenal artery courses along the anterior surface of the head of the pancreas, descending between the duodenum and the pancreatic head. As it travels inferiorly, it gives off multiple small pancreatic branches that penetrate the parenchyma of the pancreatic head, providing arterial blood supply to this region. These branches anastomose with corresponding pancreatic branches from the anterior inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (a branch of the superior mesenteric artery), forming the anterior pancreaticoduodenal arterial arcade.
Key Features
Origin: Anterior superior pancreaticoduodenal artery (from the gastroduodenal artery)
Territory of supply: Parenchyma of the pancreatic head and adjacent portions of the duodenal wall
Anastomotic connections: These branches participate in the anterior pancreaticoduodenal arcade, which connects the celiac trunk circulation (via the gastroduodenal artery) with the superior mesenteric artery circulation (via the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery)
Clinical significance: This anastomotic network is critical in maintaining collateral blood flow to the pancreatic head and duodenum, particularly in cases of celiac trunk or superior mesenteric artery stenosis. Knowledge of these branches is essential during pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure), as inadvertent injury can lead to ischemia of the pancreatic remnant or duodenal stump
Variations
The number and caliber of these pancreatic branches are variable. In some individuals, the anterior and posterior arcades may be incomplete or have variant origins, which is of particular surgical importance.
