Walls of lateral ventricle

Parietes ventriculi lateralis

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The walls of lateral ventricle vary according to its different parts, i.e. the frontal horn, body, atrium, temporal horn and occipital horn.

Part

Principal walls/boundaries

Frontal horn

Roof & anterior wall: genu of corpus callosum; floor: rostrum of corpus callosum; floor and lateral wall: head of caudate nucleus; medial wall: septum pellucidum, with the columns of fornix inferiorly.

Body

Roof: body of corpus callosum; floor: thalamus and body of caudate nucleus; lateral wall: floor extends to form the lateral wall (caudate nucleus); medial wall: septum pellucidum superiorly and body of fornix inferomedially.

Atrium

Roof: body and splenium of corpus callosum with tapetum; lateral wall: mainly tapetum; floor: collateral trigone; medial wall: calcar avis and bulb of corpus callosum.

Occipital horn

Roof & lateral wall: tapetum; floor: collateral trigone; medial wall: bulb of corpus callosum and calcar avis.

Temporal horn

Roof: thalamus, tail of caudate nucleus and tapetum; floor: hippocampus and collateral eminence; lateral wall: tapetum; medial wall: related to the choroidal fissure.
