Periosteal cranial dura

Pars periostea durae cranialis

  • Latin synonym: Pars periostea durae matris cranialis; Endocranium
  • Synonym: Periosteal cranial dura mater

Definition

The periosteal cranial dura (a.k.a. the endosteal cranial dura) refers to the outer layer of the cranial dura mater that covers the inner surface of the skull’s cranial cavity. It extends as the periosteum on the outer surface of the skull bone.

In contrast, the inner meningeal layer that envelops the brain extends downward as the spinal dura mater through the foramen magnum.
