Phalanx of hand
Phalanx manus
Definition
A phalanx of the hand is a long bone found in the fingers and thumb, forming the skeletal framework of the digits. Each finger (index to little) contains three phalanges: proximal, middle, and distal; the thumb typically has two, proximal and distal, though rare anatomical variants exist.
The phalanx consists of a base (proximal end), shaft (diaphysis), and head (distal end). The base articulates with the adjacent metacarpal or phalanx, forming the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) or interphalangeal (IP) joints, respectively.
