Definition

The pharyngooesophageal constriction is located at the junction of the pharynx with the oesophagus (C5 vertebral level), behind the cricoid cartilage, caused by contraction of the cricopharyngeal part of the inferior constrictor of the pharynx (upper esophageal sphincter).
