Definition
The posterior part (inferior layer) of the coronary ligament is the peritoneal reflection that extends from the inferior (posterior) surface of the right lobe of the liver to the upper pole of the right kidney and the right adrenal gland, forming the lower boundary of the hepatic bare area the region of the liver's posterior surface devoid of peritoneal covering.
The coronary ligament of the liver is composed of two layers a superior (anterior) layer and an inferior (posterior) layer both of which are peritoneal reflections connecting the liver to the diaphragm and adjacent retroperitoneal structures. Because the liver is posteriorly connected to the diaphragm, these layers are more accurately described as superior and inferior rather than anterior and posterior, though both terminologies are used in clinical practice.
The anterior part of coronary ligament (superior layer) reflects from the diaphragm onto the superior surface of the right lobe of the liver.
The posterior part of coronary ligament (inferior layer) reflects from the inferior surface of the right lobe of the liver onto the right kidney and adrenal gland, forming the hepatorenal ligament. This layer constitutes the upper boundary of the hepatorenal recess (Morison's pouch).
The two layers converge laterally to form the right triangular ligament. The space between the superior and inferior layers the bare area is where the liver is in direct contact with the diaphragm without intervening peritoneum.
