Definition

Antoine Micheau

The posterior vestibular branch of vestibulocochlear artery is the vestibular terminal division of the vestibulocochlear artery (other is the cochlear branch of vestibulocochlear artery).

It provides blood supply to structures innervated by the inferior vestibular nerve principally the saccular macula and the posterior semicircular canal crista.

This vascular territory is clinically significant because selective ischemia of this branch can produce isolated posterior canal dysfunction or saccular impairment, potentially manifesting as acute vertigo or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)-like symptoms, while sparing hearing and the structures supplied by the anterior vestibular artery (the horizontal and superior canals, and the utricle).
