Sphenoidal margin of frontal bone
Margo sphenoideus ossis frontalis
- Latin synonym: Margo sphenoidalis ossis frontalis
- Related terms: Sphenoidal margin
Definition
Sphenoidal margin of frontal bone refers to the parts of the orbital plates of the frontal bone that connect with the lesser and greater wings of the sphenoid bone.
Connection with the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone: The posterior edges of the orbital plates of the frontal bone are thin and jagged. These edges are where the frontal bone meets the lesser wings of the sphenoid bone. Together, the lesser wings and orbital plates form the floor of the anterior cranial fossa in the cranial cavity.
Connection with the greater wing of the sphenoid bone: In front of the lateral end of the orbital plate’s posterior border, there are rough triangular areas on their lower side. These areas are where the frontal bone meets the greater wings of the sphenoid bone. The greater wings help make up the lateral wall of the eye socket.
