Sphenoparietal suture

Sutura sphenoparietalis

Definition

The sphenoparietal suture is a cranial suture that marks the upper edge of the greater wing of sphenoid bone, where it meets the sphenoidal angle of the parietal bone. This suture is located in the floor of the temporal fossa, a.k.a. the temple region of the skull. At this point, the frontal and temporal bones converge as well. These four bones together make up an area known as the pterion, which is notably thin and fragile. A forceful blow to the side of the head, typically the temple, can crack this area and possibly rupture the middle meningeal arteries located beneath it, leading to a serious condition known as an epidural hemorrhage.
