Parietal margin of greater wing

Margo parietalis alae majoris

  • Related terms: Parietal margin

Definition

The parietal margin of greater wing refers to its upper margin. It articulates superiorly with the sphenoidal angle of the parietal bone, creating what’s called the sphenoparietal suture. The frontal and temporal bones also join at this location. Together, these four bones form a region of the skull called the pterion, which is particularly thin. A strong impact to the side of the head, often the temple area, can fracture this region, potentially rupturing the middle meningeal arteries beneath and leading to an epidural hemorrhage.
