Spatium subcutaneum perinei
- Latin synonym: Saccus subcutaneous perinei
- Synonym: Subcutaneous perineal pouch
Definition
The subcutaneous perineal space (Subcutaneous perineal pouch) is a potential space anteriorly located in the urogenital triangle.
It is bounded :
Superiorly: perineal membrane
Inferiorly: membranous layer of perineal subcutaneous tissue (fascia of Colles)
Lateraly: ischiopubic ramus
It communicates anteriorly with the membranous layer of abdominal subcutaneous tissue (Scarpa's fascia).
Extravasations or collections int the subcutaneous perineal pouch may track, deep to the membranous layer of perineal subcutaneous tissue, into the anterior abdominal wall, along the clitoris or penis and/or into the labia and scrotum.
Note: the difference between the subcutaneous perineal space and the superficial perineal space remains unclear.
