Sublentiform limb of internal capsule
Pars sublentiformis capsulae internae
- Synonym: Sublenticular limb of internal capsule
- Related terms: Sublentiform limb; Sublentiform limb; Sublenticular limb
Definition
The sublentiform part of internal capsule (a.k.a. the sublenticular part) lies inferior to the lentiform nucleus. It contains the inferior thalamic radiation, which passes from the thalamus through the inferior thalamic peduncle to reach the insula, temporal lobe, and ventral part of the frontal lobe.
These thalamocortical fibres include pathways involved in sensory processing; for example, the medial geniculate nucleus relays auditory information to the auditory cortex in the temporal lobe.
Key pathway
Thalamus → inferior thalamic peduncle → sublentiform part of internal capsule → insular, temporal and ventral frontal cortex.
