Superficial layer of collateral medial ligament
Pars superficialis ligamenti collateralis medialis
- Latin synonym: Pars superficialis ligamenti deltodei articulationis talocruralis
- Synonym: Deep layer of deltoid ligament of ankle
Definition
The superficial layer of the medial collateral ligament is the outer, more extensive component of the medial collateral ligament of the ankle, a strong triangular ligament located on the medial side of the ankle. It originates from the medial malleolus of the tibia and fans out to insert onto multiple tarsal bones, including the navicular, talus, and calcaneus. This layer primarily stabilizes the ankle joint by resisting excessive eversion and external rotation of the foot.
