Tibiospring ligament

Tibiospring ligament

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The tibiospring ligament is a constant fascicle of the superficial layer of the deltoid (medial collateral) ligament complex of the ankle. It originates from the medial malleolus of the tibia and inserts onto the spring ligament (plantar calcaneonavicular ligament) complex, rather than directly onto a tarsal bone.

It is one of the three consistently present bands of the deltoid ligament, along with the tibionavicular ligament and the deep posterior tibiotalar ligament.

Its tibial origin arises from the anterior colliculus of the medial malleolus

Its distal insertion is located at approximately 35% of the spring ligament's posteroanterior distance.

It is one of the longest fascicles of the deltoid complex, comparable in length to the tibiocalcaneal ligament.

The tibiospring ligament serves as a direct connection between the tibia and the spring ligament complex, reinforcing the spring ligament's role as the primary static stabilizer of the medial longitudinal arch and the talonavicular joint. Through this attachment, it contributes to medial ankle stability and indirectly supports the head of the talus.
