IMAIOS

The superior papillary muscle of left ventricle (Superolateral; Anterolateral; Anterior papillary muscle of left ventricle) ) arises from the superolateral (anterolateral) wall of the left ventricle, t the junction of the lateral and anterior walls, and projects into the ventricular cavity.

The superior papillary muscle is usually a single, robust muscle body, but anatomical variation exists: in most hearts, it is undivided, while in a minority, it may have two or more heads. It is covered by endocardium and attached to the ventricular wall via trabeculae carneae rather than directly to the solid myocardium. The muscle gives rise to chordae tendineae that attach to both the anterior and posterior leaflets of the mitral valve, specifically to the lateral half of each leaflet.
