Trabecular part of left ventricle
Pars trabecularis ventriculi sinistri
Definition
The trabecular part of the left ventricle refers to the apical and inner portion of the ventricular cavity that is characterized by a network of muscular ridges and recesses called trabeculae carneae.
The left ventricle can be divided morphologically into two regions:
The inlet and outlet portions, which are smoother and more compact (housing the mitral valve inflow and the left ventricular outflow tract leading to the aortic valve).
The trabecular/apical portion, which contains coarse muscular bundles projecting from the ventricular wall.
These trabeculae carneae form an irregular meshwork that lines the endocardial surface. They vary in size and thickness, and in the left ventricle they are generally finer and more delicate compared to the more prominent trabeculae of the right ventricle.
