Coronary sulcus
Sulcus coronarius
- Latin synonym: Sulcus atrioventricularis
- Synonym: Atrioventricular sulcus; Atrioventricular groove
Definition
The right and left atria are separated from the ventricles by the coronary sulcus (auriculoventricularg roove); this contains the trunks of the nutrient vessels of the heart, and is deficient in front, where it is crossed by the root of the pulmonary artery.
The coronary sulcus may subdivided into two parts:
Left coronary sulcus: within this sulcus, the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery and the great cardiac vein course together, running posteriorly from the left atrioventricular junction at the crux of the heart, toward the coronary sinus.
Right coronary sulcus: The right coronary artery (RCA) and the small cardiac vein course within this sulcus.
