Inlet of left ventricle
Aditus ventriculi sinistri
- Synonym: Inlet portion of left ventricle
Definition
The inlet of the left ventricle refers to the portion of the chamber that receives blood from the left atrium. It is located posteriorly and inferiorly at the base of the ventricle.
he inlet is guarded by the mitral valve, which comprises two leaflets—commonly described as the aortic (anterior) and mural (posterior) leaflets. These leaflets are supported by chordae tendineae that attach to two papillary muscles, which are typically located infero-septally and supero-laterally within the ventricular cavity. The inlet region is demarcated superiorly by the mitral annulus and extends to the bases of the papillary muscles.
The inlet is separated from the outlet and apical components of the left ventricle by the arrangement of the mitral valve and the underlying trabeculated myocardium.
