Suprapineal recess

Recessus suprapinealis

Definition

Suprapineal recess is an extension of the third ventricle which lies above the pineal stalk or just above the superior wall of the pineal recess. In extreme cases of hydrocephalus in babies, the suprapineal recess can get dilated and put pressure on the tectum leading to ‘setting sun’ of the eyes–an ophthalmological finding where both eyes appear to be directed downwards due to an upward gaze palsy (third nerve palsy).
