Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The suspensory ligament of the thyroid gland (a.k.a. the Berry’s ligament) is a thickened band of pretracheal fascia located on the posteromedial aspect of each lobe of the thyroid gland. It anchors the thyroid gland to the cricoid cartilage and upper tracheal rings. It secures the gland while allowing it to move with the larynx during swallowing.

Located posteromedially on each lobe, it lies close to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, making it an important surgical landmark during thyroid operations.
