Definition

Antoine Micheau

The umbilicus, commonly known as the navel or belly button, is a scar on the abdomen that marks the site of the former umbilical cord attachment in the fetus. It is a central anatomical feature that serves as a landmark for various clinical and surgical procedures.

During fetal development, the umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta, allowing for the exchange of nutrients, gases, and waste products. After birth, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, leaving behind the umbilical stump, which eventually falls off, forming the umbilicus.
