Umbilical ring
Anulus umbilicalis
Definition
The umbilical ring is a fibrous ring on the linea alba, that is involved in the closure of the abdominal wall after the umbilical cord is cut and the umbilical vessels obliterate postnatally.
The umbilical ring is closed in adults whereas in the fetus it exists as an aperture and transmits the umbilical vessels (the umbilical vessels become ligaments, such as the ligamentum teres hepatis and the median umbilical ligament in adult)
