Volar plate

Lamina palmaris

  • Synonym: Palmar plate; Palmar interphalangeal ligament

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The volar plates (Palmar plate; palmar ligaments) are thick, dense, fibrocartilaginous structures, placed upon the volar surfaces of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints in the intervals between the collateral ligaments, to which they are connected.

The volar plates are thinner and more flexible in their centralproximal part. They passe into the floor of the tendon sheaths above the interphalangeal joints.
