Normal angiography of the lower limb (DSA)

Normal angiography of the lower limb (DSA)

Normal angiography of the lower limb (DSA)

Introduction

This anatomical module of e-Anatomy is dedicated to the vascular anatomy of the arteries of the lower limb on a peripheral angiogram (Digital Subtraction Angiography - DSA)
This angiographic atlas of arteries of the lower limb has been designed to help radiologists and vascular surgeons in their daily practice.

Material and methods

The images of this lower limb artery angiography combine two different patients:

  •  A healthy patient was used for the pelvic projections and the bolus chasing DSA of the whole lower limb. The images were provided by Julien Frandon – MD (Radiologist - Nîmes, France)
  • For the foot, a patient with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) (severe ischemic ulcers due to diabetes mellitus), with severe occlusions and collateral flow (with a lack of arteries like the lateral plantar artery or the superficial plantar arch). The images of the arteries of the foot were provided by Hamid Zarqane – MD (Radiologist - Montpellier, France)

The anatomical structures of this vascular anatomy atlas have been labeled on the lower limb arteriogram images by Antoine Micheau M.D. (Radiologist, Montpellier – France), based on  the Terminologia Anatomica (TA2 – 2020). Some terms were added, commonly used for the radiological vascular anatomy of the lower extremities, such as “superficial and common femoral artery” or “tibiofibular trunk”.
We would like to thank Michel Alauzen M.D. (Vascular surgery, Montpellier –  France) for his precious advice in vascular anatomy.
