Aortic sinus

Sinus aortae

  • Eponym: Vasalva

Definition

Antoine Micheau

The aortic sinuses (also known in human anatomy as the sinuses of Valsalva) are three distinct, bulging pockets located in the aortic root, immediately distal to the aortic valve leaflets. Each sinus is associated with a corresponding cusp of the aortic valve: the right coronary sinus, the left coronary sinus, and the septal sinus. The right and left coronary sinuses give rise to the respective coronary arteries, while the septal (noncoronary) sinus does not have an associated coronary ostium.
