Medial saphenous vein [great]

Vena saphena medialis [magna]

Definition

The medial saphenous vein begins by the confluence of its cranial and caudal branches, medial to the stifle joint. It is satellite of the saphenous artery and its termination is the femoral vein, at the apex of the femoral triangle. The medial saphenous vein lies deep to the thin medial fascia lata, between the caudal belly of the m. sartorius and the m. gracilis. It is firmly anchored by fascia between these muscles and is a common site for venipuncture in carnivores.
