Thoracic part
Pars thoracica
- Related terms: Thoracic part of the trachea
Definition
The thoracic part of the trachea is the segment of the trachea located within the thoracic cavity, extending from the thoracic inlet to the carina (or tracheal bifurcation). Within the thorax, it is primarily situated in the cranio-ventral mediastinum, dorsal to the heart and great vessels, and ventral to the esophagus.
This portion is less mobile than the cervical part and is surrounded by vital structures, making it more challenging to access surgically.
