Urogenital system
Systema urogenitale
- Latin synonym: Apparatus urogenitalis
Definition
The urogenital system is a group of organs and structures that perform two essential functions in domestic animals: the filtration and excretion of nitrogenous waste through the urinary system, and reproduction through the genital system. The association of urinary and genital organs, both male and female, within a single system is based on their anatomical and developmental proximity.
The main components of the urogenital system are:
The urinary system: kidneys, ureters, bladder.
The internal male genital organs: testes, epididymis, ductus deferens, spermatic cord, accessory glands.
The external male genital organs: penis, urethra, scrotum.
The internal female genital organs: ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina.
The external female genital organs: vulva, clitoris, urethra.
The perineum.
