Urinary system
Systema urinarium
- Latin synonym: Organa urinaria
- Synonym: Urinary organs
Definition
The urinary system refers to the group of organs responsible for the production, transport, storage, and excretion of urine in animals. Its primary functions are to regulate fluid balance, eliminate waste products of metabolism (especially nitrogenous wastes like urea), and help maintain electrolyte and acid-base balance.
The urinary system typically includes:
Kidneys – filter blood to form urine.
Ureters – transport urine from kidneys to the bladder.
Urinary bladder – stores urine.
Urethra – conveys urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. The urethra is included in the external genital organs (and not in urinary system) in the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria
