Thymus

Thymus

Definition

Juliette Garnodier

The thymus is a primary, transient, and bilobed lymphoid organ, located mainly in the cranial region of the mediastinum, sometimes extending into the neck in young animals. It plays an essential role in the differentiation and maturation of T lymphocytes.

It is a highly developed organ in young individuals, which then undergoes physiological involution with age (progressive replacement by adipose tissue).
