Vorticose veins

Venae vorticosae

  • Eponym: Ruysch'

Definition

Felipe Barona Lopez

The four vorticose veins are the main drainers of blood from the vascular layer of eyeball. They each penetrate the sclera from a different quadrant close to the Equator of the eyeball. They are formed by the convergence of the major venules of the iris, ciliary body and choroidea. They are collected by the dorsal or ventral external ophthalmic veins, depending on their position.
