Definition

Antoine Micheau

The tendon of the tibialis anterior (Tibialis anterior tendon) is the distal continuation of the tibialis anterior muscle, which originates from the lateral condyle and proximal two-thirds of the lateral surface of the tibia, the interosseous membrane, and the deep fascia of the leg. The tendon courses distally, passing beneath the superior and inferior extensor retinacula at the ankle, and typically inserts onto the medial cuneiform and the base of the first metatarsal bone. The insertion is most commonly split into two bands, with one attaching to each bone, although significant anatomical variation exists, including single or triple bands and variable insertion patterns.
