Anterior nasal spine

Spina nasalis anterior

  • Latin synonym: Spina nasalis maxillae
  • Synonym: Nasal spine of maxilla

Definition

Muhammad A. Javaid

The anterior nasal spine forms when the nasal notch—a concave edge along the inner border of the maxilla's anterior surface—extends downward, ending in a protruding bony projection. This projection, together with a similar one from the opposite side, creates the protruding bony process known as the anterior nasal spine.
