Nasal notch
Incisura nasalis
Definition
The nasal notch is a curved, concave edge outlining the inner medial border of the anterior surface of the maxilla. It extends downwards, ending in a protuding bone. This bone, paired with a similar projection from the opposite side, forms the anterior nasal spine. Furthermore, the nasal notch marks the origin of two important muscles of our face along its margins. These include the depressor septi muscle which originates from the incisive fossa, a shallow depression that is located just above the incisor teeth and located below the nasal notch. The depressor septi muscle starts at the incisive fossa—a shallow pit above the incisor teeth and just beneath the nasal notch. Meanwhile, the nasalis muscle begins slightly above and to the side of the incisive fossa, near the depressor septi's origin.
