Apex of left ventricle
Apex ventriculi sinistri
- Related terms: Apical
Definition
The apex of the left ventricle is the most inferior, anterior of the left ventricular chamber, forming the tip of the heart.
It is located opposite the base of the heart and is typically found near the fifth intercostal space at the midclavicular line in most individuals with normal cardiac orientation (levocardia).
The apex is characterized by a tapered, thin-walled region, and in imaging (such as echocardiography), it is where the left ventricle narrows and no internal structures (such as papillary muscles or valves) are seen.
The apex is separated from the right ventricular apex by the anterior and posterior interventricular sulci, along which the coronary vessels run.
