Bronchomediastinal trunk

Truncus bronchomediastinalis

Bronchomediastinal trunk is the anatomical term from Terminologia Anatomica 1 that groups:

  • The left bronchomediastinal lymphatic trunk that is a component of the lymphatic system that drains lymph from the left side of the thorax, including the left lung, mediastinum, and parts of the heart. It typically drains into the thoracic duct, or sometimes directly into the venous angle, where the internal jugular and subclavian veins meet.

  • The right bronchomediastinal lymphatic trunk drains lymph from the right side of the thorax, including the right lung, right side of the heart, and parts of the diaphragm coming from the right bronchopulmonary (hilar) nodes, right paratracheal nodes, and other mediastinal nodes. Formed by the convergence of efferent lymphatic vessels from the right bronchopulmonary (hilar) nodes, right paratracheal nodes, and other mediastinal nodes, the right bronchomediastinal lymphatic trunk then ascends and usually empties into the right lymphatic duct, which subsequently drains into the venous system at the junction of the right subclavian and internal jugular veins.
